Today will be our 25th book club and somehow I can’t really believe that we made it this far. When Charlotte and I came up with the idea of starting our own book club, we didn’t really plan anything further beyond our release party and the first two meetings. We were just having fun.

For our first book club we had set a maximum of 15 book clubbers and within a couple of weeks we had more people than that wanting to show up. Of course at the book club itself, half of the people that had signed up never showed, but we were already so happy that it wasn’t just the two of us. And then people just kept showing up, one month after the other, people we had never met before. It still happens that we’re surprised that so many people show up, that it isn’t just us two sitting a bar talking about books for hours. But by now we’ve gathered a great set of regular book clubbers that we couldn’t be happier with and we make sure there’s always room for new people (although not always literal room, sorry about October you guys…).

Our book club has gone through some changes since that first night at Lof der Zoetheid. We’ve moved locations, we have so many different members not even Esmée know all of their names anymore and we’ve added an extra book club at Donner. We’ve read all kinds of books, some of which were good and some that were kind of terrible, but every book club night was fun in its own way. We love the discussions we have about the books we read and love that we can easily diverge into discussions about which characters should be played by what actors as well as other books and TV shows and movies. Our book club nights are supposed to be fun, a night where we can all just hang out and talk about the things we like and that is exactly what we feel we have accomplished.

So this is all a very maudlin, roundabout way of saying thank you to everyone who is or has been part of our book club. If you show up every month or if you’ve just been there once, we’re happy we got to meet you and talk to you about the thing we love most. Of course we appreciate the people who show up every month just a little more than the ones who show up once, but you can’t blame us for that. We also want to thank everyone that has helped us along the way, all the great places that made room for us and the great people that keep working with us even though we can’t pay them, because we refuse to make the book club a paid thing. We couldn’t have done this without any of you.

Tonight we’re celebrating our 25th book club, two years and three months after our first actual meeting. We have no idea how long our book club will still keep going, but we’re not thinking about leaving any time soon, so as long as you guys keep showing up, we’ll be in business. We’re looking forward to making the next year just as great as this one and we hope you will all be there with us.

Esmée & Charlotte

P.S. We’re still taking bribes if you want to win our quiz tonight…

Bored to Death book club is set up by two sisters who love to read and have nothing better to do than to start a book club.
